Over the last 10 years, my brother Abe, 28, has suffered through severe anxiety, depression, medication induced schizophrenic breaks and an Epstein-Barr like virus which all have drained him of his energy and kept him from venturing out on his own. Abe still lives at home and doesn't have a driver's license, not that he needs one because he is often too tired to get out of bed much less drive. This Christmas, however, was very different: with treatment from a new doctor, a new man has begun to appear out from behind the very young old man Abe has become. I love seeing these changes in him. When he actually stood up to look over someone's shoulder to get a better look at a family photo he passed through the light and I made this shot.

We're Crafty
Alison and I got a little creative this year wrapping Christmas presents. No, I haven't abandoned chanukkah, but I have decided to give gifts in whatever spirt another wishes to receive one. Alison's gift wrap job for her mother is on the right and my gift wrap job for our building manager is on the left. And, yes, that is a Dior bow thanks for noticing.

Identity
How do you know who you are, and what if you are multicultural or were adopted into another race? This project examines the lives of three Asian Americans and how they deal with these questions and more.
I did this project for my Asian American studies class and decided to use it as my first attempt to use Brightcove to output flv to the internet. So, what do you think?

Daily work
This is Raymundo Orozco, 11. He attends Esperanza elementary school in one of East Oakland's roughest neighborhoods. Although he's been in several fights at school, he is participating in a Safe Ambassador's program so that he can help make his school a safer place.
This is Erin Neel. She runs "Oakland Unwrapped," an online marketplace for local artists and businesses. I photographed her in her beautiful studio apartment in downtown Oakland.

Hanging out in East Oakland
James Albright, 18, of Fremont High School in Oakland, Calif., is this week's "Athlete of the Week" for his supa dupa basketball skills. He is a small forward and a power forward.
Later in the day, I attended Mass in honor of the Virgin Guadalupe. There were dancers who performed traditional Aztec dances. Photos by Alison Yin/Oakland Tribune

Daily Double A speaks at SFBAPPA Digital Conference
Alison and I took part in a blogging panel at SFBAPPA's annual Digital Conference. We had a lot of fun and Alison became the new Coordinator of SFBAPPA's Mentor Program.

In memory of Vern Williams, The Modesto Bee DOP
Today, when I called Alison between classes she told me my boss Vern had died this morning. The photo above was from our holiday lunch last year. Vern Williams was more like a second father or a coach than a boss. He had been sick longer than I have been a member of the Bee's Photo department, and even though I knew this was coming all too soon, I still feel shocked and crushed that he is gone. He was the kind of person you wanted to do your best work for... I will miss him.
