Mo Mashhoon has restored a building in downtown that was the first skyscraper. This building has been empty and derelict since it was damaged in the earthquake of 1989.

Updates!
Here are some photos from assignments in December and January - maybe even some from November. I'm a bit behind on my blogging.
Well, I saw Bill Clinton, but clearly was not able to get close to him. Rats. It was still pretty cool to listen to him speak.
A birthday celebration for Martin Luther King Jr. in downtown Oakland.
These kids have lice.
An anti-abortion rally. Two women with opposite view points go at it finger to finger. I really detest it when parents shove signs into little kids' hands - children who most likely not old enough to form their own view point.
Last week I attended a press conference for teachers in the Oakland Unified School District. Teachers are working on negotiating a new contract that will include higher salaries and fewer kids in each class among many other completely valid requests. The conference was especially emotional in the wake of nine year old Christopher Rodriguez being struck by a stray bullet a couple of weeks ago while taking a piano lesson at his school. Teachers and educators seem to be one of the most under-valued professions in this country.
These are a few photos that I did for the Detroit News on green cars. No place seems to be greener than Santa Monica, which is where all these were made.

The Cathedral the Christ of the Light
On New Year's eve, I had an assignment to photograph this Cathedral in Lake Merritt (Oakland of course) that has been in construction since 2000. The place was supposed to be all lit up as a gift for the community. Adm came with me, and in attempt number one, we found a great spot to shoot from and met a very nice security guard named Al Green, but no lights from the Cathedral. I grabbed this pic:
For attempt number 2, I received a call from the Cathedral's PR guy who informed me that the lights were now working. Went back up on January 2 with a tripod and Ross's company to grab this pic:
