In memory of Vern Williams, The Modesto Bee DOP

Today, when I called Alison between classes she told me my boss Vern had died this morning. The photo above was from our holiday lunch last year. Vern Williams was more like a second father or a coach than a boss. He had been sick longer than I have been a member of the Bee's Photo department, and even though I knew this was coming all too soon, I still feel shocked and crushed that he is gone. He was the kind of person you wanted to do your best work for... I will miss him.

Last week I visited a turkey farm in Santa Rosa, Calif., and put together a soundslide as a mini feature in anticipation of Thanksgiving. This was also the first soundslide/multimedia piece created for AP by a freelancer.
