The Birds and the Bees

Alison and I went to my parent's place in Greeley Hill, near Yosemite, for the weekend. We went up to work on my father's website. It takes a lot of work to edit 50 years worth of images. We are also currently re-designing her site, so be ready for that by the end of summer.

While we were there, I got some macro and telephoto time in shooting the birds and the bees. I am only 20 feet away from the hummingbird and the 300mm just doesn't cut it. I was a little sore from sitting in one spot for a couple of hours waiting for the birds, but I had a ton of fun.

Cantilever Project Launch

I want to share the latest project I finished editing for photographer Anne Hamersky. Anne was working for the Walter and Elise Haas Fund documenting some of the orginzations their grants fund, and she pitched a set of storytelling slideshows. I feel very lucky I had the chance to bring my own style to some common editing techniques. Anne and I are very proud of the completed stories. So, to make a long story short, here is the Cantilever Project. Thanks for looking.

Trucker Strike

Since we've moved to Oakland, and since I've been working for the Trib, I've found that Oakland is a city chock full of stories.

Within Oakland lies the Port, one of the five largest ports in the country, and within the Port, are a host of even more stories. The trucking industry is a large part of the Port, and because truckers have primarily become independent contractors (because companies realize they can save a few bucks by hiring freelance truckers rather than employ truckers and pay benefits...), there are now a ton of inequities that fall into the trucking industry. Each morning, independent truckers wake early so they can be at the Port before dawn, waiting in line for a job. Most of these jobs barely cover the cost of gas, let alone maintenance and upkeep of such a large vehicle. There is no union for these independent truckers, and furthermore, they are the most diverse group of workers: the majority are immigrants hailing from all parts of the world, so they all speak unique languages and little English, which makes it even more difficult to try to organize them. At any rate, a couple of months ago, they went on strike for a few days to try to get higher wages.

This is an image from one of their strikes. This man angrily waves his fist at a trucker driving by who is obviously not participating in the strike, and therefore breaking the solidarity.

I love Wacom!

A lot of what you see in advertising photography is done in post. Sometimes I get hired to do post work on product photography. I don't share the "post" work I have done, but I did this just for fun.

Alison and I both love Wacom and decided to get her the new Graphire Wireless model. After over a month of waiting because it was out of stock it finally arrived, and I wouldn't let her touch it because I wanted to shoot it first. She loved this as I am sure you can understand.

This was a very minimal set up: white sheet, black paper, two lights, coat hanger, string, and a plastic riser. I spare no expense. The whole thing was shot in my kitchen on my d300. I also posted the raw file below.

I should note that this is in no way affiliated with Wacom, but they are fantastic and you should buy one if you don't have one already.

Thanks for looking and reading.

I love my job!

Anne Hamersky took this of me just after I shot the picture I posted of this kid a couple of days ago. I think that this says how I feel about taking photographs. I really hope that everyone can find something they love to do as much as I love doing what I do.

Cute Kid Poolside Shower

Recently, I assisted for Anne Hamersky on a shoot at a jesuit summer camp. I photographed this kid playing in the shower next to the pool where his sister was playing. It was family day while we were there, and a lot of kids were running around. I forgot how fun it can be making pictures of kids just being themselves.

Black Widow

Look what I found in my parents' pump house in Greeley Hill Last week. The Black Widow was huge, but I was in no real danger and killed her after she posed for the portrait. I hate spiders even thought I understand how they are important for pest control. I wonder how they evolved to have the hourglass?

From Dark to Dim

Darkrooms have always been a comforting place for me. In the dark with water running and images appearing like little dreams made real. I especially felt this way about my father's darkroom. I grew up in darkrooms, and my very idea of my father has always been synonymous with working in a darkroom.

Upon arriving at my parents' house this week, my father's darkroom sink lay in the front yard like a heart ripped from my childhood. My dad and my uncle excitedly told me the room was now a dimroom, digital imaging room. Dimroom may be a witty thought, but it felt like any other room. I guess light chases away inner peace, imagination or whatever that special thing that hides inside us all is, even the low light of the dimroom.

Cole in the Light

As The Dave Hanley Band waited to play at my friends Tony and Cristina's wedding their harmonica player, Cole who is also a friend, looked to the hall's door to see if it was time to go on stage. These guys play amazing bluegrass or indy folk, whatever you want to call it. I took this a long time ago. but I just found it in a wedding folder the other day.

Fun with lighting product shots

These are just some fun product shots I did. Shooting stuff that doesn't move really gives you the time to play with light.

The Latest From My BART Project

Alison and I were driving around West Oakland and all of a sudden we saw this guy in an empty lot with the tracks behind him. This man is collecting recyclables for money while the people on the BART pass by oblivious to what is going on below.

This little kid refused to sit with his family.
