Mmmmmmm Veggies!

In an effort to eat healthy, organic foods, Alison and I have began receiving a fresh produce box from River Dog Farms. Each week, we get a box of seasonal fruits and vegetables that taste so fresh and delicious. The box has introduced us to lots of new vegetables, forcing us to learn how to cook with new ingredients including romanesco, rapini, kale, chard and turnips. If you're in the Bay Area, I definitely recommend this - not only do you end up eating more veggies, but you're supporting a local organic farm!

The sweet smell of smoke

I went back home after the new year to see my parents and there was some pile burning underway. I still love the smell of smoke. I feel like I am home when I smell it. Here are some photos of the guys working in the smoke.

MJC New Sign

A quick enterprise shot for the Modesto Bee of the new sign going up at Modesto Junior College's track. This was just a fun backlight situation that I couldn't pass up.

Stranger Furniture

It's a new year, and I feel inspired to blog more and more frequently!

I'm still going through photos from 2009, so here's a set that Adm and I both did for our friend and furniture maker Bill Stranger. Bill made a bed with side table for a client so we took it to the parking lot behind his studio to photograph them in Altadena. Although the backdrop gave a nice industrial look, it was pretty cluttered so we had to figure out how to keep the light off of the back drop while overpowering the sun and highlighting the wood. Additionally, it was no easy feat moving the bed around since it was pretty heavy, and we had to be careful to not damage it.

New Dreams

I added these two new images to my dreams porfolio on my website. I haven't had much of a chance to shoot for fun, and now I am trying to get back to picking up my camera just to put a smile on my face.

Mama Tried... Merle Haggard

I never thought that I would ever get a chance to photograph Merle Haggard, but I did and he was amazing. He still sounds just like his records. I photographed him for the Modesto Bee and you can check out the rest of the photos here.

A room to live and work in

Our living room doubles as Alison's office and a place to meet with couples for wedding consultations as well as a significant part of our home. We wanted to create a nice and personal space where we would feel comfortable with friends and family, but one that also allowed us to meet with people on a professional level.

To create the room, we started with the rug to give us the color palette, which was Alison's mom's idea - her mom helped create a design plan for the room. Then we chose colors for the walls and ceiling to match the rug (swiss coffee for the ceiling, whispering wheat for three walls, and terracotta red for the accent wall). Next, we painted a couple of salvaged tables to pull out the blues from the rug. We also had silk drapes made to not only help with insulation, but also give the place a little more of a "homey" feel. The furniture is a combo of thrift stores, Anthropologie, CB2, Therapy, and Ikea. We're still short one coffee table (which a friend is making), and wall art.

Oakland Community Acupuncture

My friends and acupuncturists, Ky and Chris run Oakland Community Acupuncture, OCA. These guys are fantastic! They are very professional and when I am there I just want to hang out. Last year they hired me to shoot some images for them for the new website that they were building. Well, the website is up and you can check it out here.

Alison Yin Photo Shoot

This is a video I made of Alison's photo shoot of an aspiring dancer named Nikki. Her good friend Brandon helped out on the shoot - if you have a Neonsky website chances are good that you know him since he's the Neonsky Director of Communications. This is my first video assignment for Photo V at SFSU. I am hoping to incorporate stills into later projects.

First San Francisco Chronicle Assignment

The first story I covered for the San Francisco Chronicle was a sad one about accidental deaths in hospitals, but those are the breaks in photojournalism. I was honored to get the call. Please, check out the story here.

Destruction Derby Stan Co. Fair

Old Al, New Knees

You all keep asking me how my dad is doing. Well, he is great. He is able to do just about everything now except step on the break, and he didn't do that before. Having both of his knees replaced was hard on him, but he has bounced back and has even been spotted walking around Noah's in Modesto by himself. This picture was taken at Kiaser in Modesto the day after he had his surgery. He was in a lot of pain when this was taken, and the doctors were still having to give him blood. He told me during this visit that he was going to be ready to photograph this coming season. It looks like he might be right. He wont be able to kneel by then, but there are places he can stand and shoot from at the Raiders and the 49ers. The Old Guy still has it... Way to go Dad.

Ice Cube, Hot Night

It was a very hot day when I picked up my assignment for the Ice Cube concert on 10th Street in Modesto for the Bee. I was excited for the challenge and decided to shoot without a flash - no safety net. I practiced during the warm up acts, but my D300 made it almost too easy. I kept waiting for the night air to cool, but when Ice Cube took the stage at 12:45am, it was still in the high 80s. After having been kicked out of the camera pit, all of us photographers had to work our way back into the back stage area, and then back into our positions. I only had about 15 Minutes to shoot since I couldn't burn too many overtime hours, and at the last second, Ice Cube's manager let me go on stage just before Cube threw up a "W" for the West Coast and the crowd went nuts. Bear Flag

There is a new wine that has just come out called Bear Flag, and it is rather close to our hearts here at the Daily Double A. One of our closest friends, Beth Cutler, and Hillary, who's wedding Ali and I photographed last night, actually made this wine. It just hit shelves last Tuesday and I think that it is fantastic. Everything about this wine is very cool. You can check out the site for the wine here.
